For more than 30 years, Yana Zaichenko, her mother and children lived in this apartment in the village of Staryi Saltiv in Kharkiv region.
Before the war, she worked as a saleswoman and raised two children, who are now 8 and 19 years old. The Russians occupied their village in the first days of the invasion. The Zaichenko family evacuated deep into the Kharkiv region. In May, the Ukrainian military liberated Staryi Saltiv, and since then it has been under constant Russian shelling. Yana's house was one of the first to be hit by the bombing.
The apartment was left without windows and doors. Later, the family sealed the windows with film and replaced the damaged plumbing, but now they are out of the funds for a full repair. The family has to find resources to rent temporary housing as IDPs.
